Are you new to this whole skating business? We know you have what it takes! Skating is fun, good fitness, and a great way to spend time with friends. You’re probably ready to hit the rink, but before you get rolling, here are a few beginner skating tips to get you started.
A Beginner’s Guide to Roller-Skating
Dress for comfort. You’ll want to wear comfortable clothing that’s easy to move in. Loose pants and t-shirts make great skating attire, as do fitted workout gear like yoga pants. Make sure your socks aren’t too thick, or you may have trouble lacing your skates tightly enough to give you optimal control.
- Learn to fall. “What? I thought that’s the opposite of what I wanted!” Learning to fall gives you confidence as you skate. It’s also a great way to prevent injuries. Before putting on your skates, practice falling to your knees on the carpet. You can also practice side falls, especially if you’re learning to inline skate.
- Stick to the wall. Use it to balance yourself if you start to fall. The outside ring of the rink is designated for slow or beginner skaters, so you won’t have to worry about getting in someone’s way. That said, always pay attention to your surroundings!
- Be polite. Everyone starts somewhere, and your fellow skaters know what it’s like to feel shaky on their skates. Just stick to the rules of the rink and everyone will get along fine.
