Are your kids going stir crazy? Has this wacky winter weather left them ready for spring? Do you want a fun way to keep them moving when it’s cold outside? Get your family involved in the wonderful world of roller sports.
If your child loves thrill rides, sledding, and going as fast as they can at Southwestern Skate, they’ll love learning to speed skate. Speed skating is an inline roller sport that involves—you guessed it—going as fast as possible. Athletes must incorporate balance, maneuverability, and speed as they race around the track. In fact, many Olympic speed skaters switch to inline skates during the summer to practice their skills.
Does your child love to dance? Does he have an artistic soul? Does she have rhythm in her bones? Jam skating combines dancing, gymnastics, and roller-skating to create an artistic skating sport that’s growing in popularity. Kids can take it easy gliding to fun beats, or push their skating skills to new levels with complicated twists, balances, and jumps.
A contact sport for the team crowd, roller derby combines skill with determination. 2 teams have 5 skaters moving counterclockwise around the track. Designated skaters score points by lapping the other team, while their team members block their opponents. Roller derby is a thriving, female-dominated sport with almost 400 full-member leagues still going strong.
